Today was another awesome day! We visited Fernadina Island; the youngest of the Galápagos Islands and the most volcanically active. We’re told it’s single volcano, La Cumbre, erupts every few years.
Fernandina is also home to the largest colony of marine iguanas. These reptiles were amazing to see…they look like baby Godzillas! They dive in the ocean to eat algae off the rocks. We were able to watch this while snorkeling. It was awesome!
While hiking around the island we were fortunate to see a mama sea lion and her newborn pup. It was so newborn we could see the baby's umbilical cord!
We also did some coastal exploring of Punta Vincente Roca on Isabela island. The geologic formations from the volcanic eruptions were something to see. We also saw penguins, sea turtles, boobies, cormorants, etc.
Back on the boat, we were invited to the Captain’s bridge as we crossed the equatorial line. It was neat to get a pic of the GPS reading 0.00.000. While on the bridge, the staff surprised us and came up dressed as pirates complete with faux hair, swords, etc. We followed them to the salon where the festivities continued, including playing charades of animals of the Galápagos.
The evening sunset was amazing. I could easily post over 30 pics of it!
