Today was a FULL day. We had a guide who drove us all around Istria including Rovinj, Motovun and Hum.

We left at 10:00 am and didn’t get back to the hotel until about 8:30 pm.

We saw beautiful views along the way and our driver shared facts and information with us throughout the day.

Rovinj was my favorite stop of the day. Needless to say, there was a lot of history, beautiful buildings and amazingly solid cobblestone streets and pathways. Denise, Lisa and I picked up some lovely goodies including fish Christmas tree ornaments. Rovinj is an old fishing town, hence the fish.

In Motovun there was a stop for wine tasting for Rob, Denise, Lisa & James. David and I enjoyed our agua and learning how different grapes can produce different tastes. Some grapes can be finicky with regard to air and moisture and some receive more energy when the grapes are thinner or leaves removed to allow more sunlight to reach the grapes. We were all a little bummed when staff said they didn’t know we were coming so there were no snacks for us. At this point we were beyond peckish and had been looking forward to some nibblies.

We then made our way to Hum, the smallest town in the world with 28 residents. We had dinner of pork, sausage and homemade sauerkraut or homemade pasta with truffles. We also learned how to write our name in Croatian.

Oh ya, truffles, I tried 3 different types. The verdict = I’m not a fan but glad I tried them. For something that lives deep within the dirt, it tasted like dirt to me. That said, I won’t be saying that out loud much here in Croatia where it’s a favorite of the locals. It’s also been a tough season for the truffles and they are hard to come by so the cost is a bit outrageous.

Also, please notice the picture of the “waver”. This is an automated mannequin type faux construction worker who waves a safety flag in construction zones. I’ve never seen anything like it but find it to be kind of clever.
